When I see an opportunity to bring a bike back from the dead, it has to be the right bike. Colnago, Somec, Eddy Merckx, De Rosa, Rossin, etc... all good stock to build on.
Then the bike and level chooses the parts. Sometimes it needs to be Nuovo Record... other times, only Super Record will do. Occasionally, it's a bike just late enough that gets a retro-modern 10-speed treatment.
Then I assess if we need paint cleanup, restoration, or a full repaint. Chrome is maintained if it can be saved... That's when alignments are checked, surfaces faced and threads tapped. I then swap out whatever travesty of bolts has been installed and replace with stainless.
All parts get a bath and disassembly... new pulleys if needed, new cables, housing and bar tape. I choose a more modern saddle but with a classic look.
When it comes time for wheels, tubulars are not off the table. We have access to NOS sew ups and a good supply of retro-style new clinchers. Rims are usually good condition or NOS GP4s, MA40s, 330s and I still have a few Saturnae and Ambrosio pairs for builds.
Then we test ride and tune... You choose pedals and if you want in stock wheels or a custom set.
If I don't have it, let's talk about your dream bike and how to make it happen. I just finished a 1985 Specialized Allez SE movie replica from American Flyers... down to the David Sommers #6 Hell of the West number plate.
Ride your vintage dream bike. Sun on your face, wind in your leather hairnet. I have a source for those as well.
